Day 174: Chicago - Baby, What a Big Surprise

Following in the footsteps of “If You Leave Me Now,” “Baby, What a Big Surprise” was another big Peter Cetera-helmed hit for the band, making it to #4 on the US pop charts in 1977.  The song was their first single from their 10th studio album Chicago XI, and the last single released before Terry Kath’s untimely death.  The album would also prove to be their last with longtime producer James William Guercio, as the band felt his influence had been growing too strong.

52 Song Pick Up* #23 - Worldwide (Kid Crate Digger IBMCs remix)

IBMCs (an International hip hop organization) contacted me a few months ago about doing a remix of the Langston Bukowski song “Worldwide” and I sent them the acappella.  A few weeks later I was delighted to receive an email back from them with this fantastic remix by Slovenian producer Kid Crate Digger.  It feels a bit serendipitous that they chose a Slovenian producer from Ljubljana to remix the track, as I am very quite possibly moving to Ljubljana later this year.  If you’re not familiar with the original, it appeared on the collaborative effort that Racecar and I put out in 2010 as Langston Bukowski, “Down and Out in Chicago & Los Angeles”, which can be heard and downloaded for free right here.  You can download this remix right here

52 Song Pick Up* #22 - Got That Good

This week’s FREE track is another joint off the new Apoc & Rel EP, “Ace Up The Sleeve”.  It’s still a rough mix, but hopefully we’ll get it cleaned up and be able to release the whole EP in the next week or so. You can download the song for FREE right here

52 Song Pick Up* #21 - My Night’s Your Day: a transatlantic romance

This week’s song is a very strange and very cool reworking of the title track to my 2008 album with Rel as The RItz, “The Night of Day”. The reworking was done by Twocsinak (aka Dj Sarah Wilson) and his fiance Beth Ward. The pair are from Bristol, UK and found me via the internets. I provided them with some acapellas for remixing and quickly forgot about it, chalking it up as another internet collaboration that never comes to fruition (I’ve been involved in a number of these). But to my surprise a few months later they sent me this gem and i was blown away! By the time we received it, though, we were kind of through promoting The Ritz album and so the song never really got exposed to an audience. Until now, of course. You can download the original version of the song right here: http://apoc.bandcamp.com/track/the-night-of-day You can download this version of the song right here

Day 142: Chicago - If You Leave Me Now

Written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera, “If You Leave Me Now” topped both the US pop and adult contemporary charts in 1976, making it the band’s first #1 hit and their biggest hit internationally.  The song was almost not included on their album Chicago X, though, as the band felt that the romantic ballad didn’t fit in with the sound of the rest of the album.  Eventually longtime producer James William Guercio convinced the band it was a hit, winning it inclusion on the album.  The success of the song led to a greater demand for more Peter Cetera fronted songs which, in turn, led to some turmoil within the group.

Download the new Racecar mixtape!!

Racecar, the other half of my group Langston Bukowski, just released a compilation of some of his many collaborations and aliases mixed by Lord Faz……it’s a great introduction to a super talented mc if you are not familiar with his work….and if you are familiar with his work, than it’s a great reminder of why his voice is so vital to the hip hop landscape…please take some time to check it out.

52 Song Pick Up* #16 - Apoc & Brendan B - So Beautiful, So Boring

Here’s the first taste of Brendan B and I’s new ep.  Brendan is the dude I started rapping with in high school and we’ve continued to record and perform together throughout the years.  This will be our first new material together since 2008’s The Planet EP.  I think people are really gonna be feeling these new songs we’ve been working on.  Rel did the beat.  You can download the song right here
